This guide helps you properly clean and maintain popular fabric types used in automotive, marine, and outdoor upholstery. Regular care extends fabric life, maintains appearance, and helps prevent mold, mildew, or permanent staining. Always check for specific brand instructions when available.
General Upholstery Maintenance
- Brush off loose dirt regularly before it becomes embedded.
- Wipe up spills promptly.
- Use mild soap and lukewarm water for spot cleaning.
- Always rinse thoroughly to remove soap residue.
- Allow fabric to air dry. Avoid machine drying unless specified.
Vinyl Upholstery (Automotive & Marine)
Examples: Marine vinyl, faux leather, textured automotive vinyl
- Use mild soap and water with a soft sponge or cloth.
- Avoid harsh solvents or bleach, which can dry and crack vinyl.
- Use a UV protectant (like 303 Protectant) every 3–6 months to reduce fading and brittleness.
- For mold/mildew: Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts water. Gently scrub, rinse well.
Solution-Dyed Acrylic Fabric
Examples: Sunbrella, Tempotest, Aqualon Edge, Hydrofend
- Clean with a solution of 1/4 cup mild soap (e.g., Woolite) per 1 gallon of lukewarm water.
- Use soft brush or sponge to scrub.
- Rinse thoroughly and air dry.
- For mildew: Add up to 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water. Rinse thoroughly. Test in an inconspicuous area first.
- Reapply fabric guard (e.g., 303 Fabric Guard) after deep cleanings or every 2–3 years.
Canvas (Natural or Synthetic)
Examples: Outdoor canvas, automotive upholstery canvas, Sunforger
- Vacuum or brush off dirt regularly.
- Spot clean with warm water and mild detergent.
- Air dry—avoid machine drying or excessive heat.
- Apply water-repellent spray periodically if fabric is untreated or heavily used.
Clear Vinyl (Windows, Enclosures, Covers)
Examples: Strataglass, Regalite, Crystal Clear, generic marine clear vinyl
- Rinse with fresh water and dry with microfiber cloth.
- Avoid ammonia-based cleaners or alcohol. Use specialized vinyl window cleaner.
- Do not fold or crease — store flat or rolled.
- Polish with a vinyl protectant to reduce clouding and UV damage.
Faux Suede & Microsuede
Examples: Olympus Microsuede, automotive suede panels
- Vacuum gently using a brush attachment to remove dust.
- Blot stains — do not rub.
- Use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap for spot cleaning.
- Never steam or machine wash unless specifically allowed.
Removable Covers (Zippered Cushions)
- Close zippers before washing.
- Machine wash cold on delicate cycle using mild detergent.
- Air dry. Do not tumble dry unless instructed by the brand.
- Check with manufacturer before removing covers — some may shrink or lose fit.
Tips for All Fabrics
- Test cleaners in a hidden area before full use.
- Avoid power washing or scrubbing with stiff brushes unless fabric is heavy-duty rated.
- Protect surrounding surfaces from bleach-based solutions.
- When in doubt, refer to manufacturer care sheets (see downloadable guides below).
